ARN talks to Netgear's Peter Triantos
What was your first job?
My first full-time job was as a computer operator for a geological company based in Port Melbourne. The most interesting part of my job was that it involved working on a Cray Supercomputer - one of only two such machines in the country at the time. I had been studying computing and been offered a temporary position to gain some experience in the industry. After a month at the company they offered me a full-time position and the rest is history.
How did you end up in the IT industry?
Through a very good friend of mine who had just started working for an IT company (United Computer Group). They were looking for sales people and he was able to organise an interview for me. I was so indebted to him I actually asked him to be my best man.
How did you progress to where you are today?
For more than16 years I have had a variety of sales roles in different organisations. I have worked in every role in the supply chain. In the vendor arena I have worked for companies such as Netcomm, Banksia and, most recently, Netgear. I have also experienced the distribution part of the industry with companies such as Prion Distribution (formerly HPD) and Alsthom IT. When I was at United Computer Group, I worked in business development. I think experiencing so many facets of the industry has been crucial to gaining an overall understanding of the way the IT industry operates in Australia.
What do you like about your current job?
It's actually the sum of a few reasons. I enjoy the flexibility of the role and the variety of challenges, working for an organisation that is innovative with its products and is customer focused, and also working with a group of highly motivated and dedicated staff.
What is the biggest achievement of your career?
Definitely my recent promotion to national distribution manager for Netgear. I am really looking forward to working with our distribution partners to ensure the continued success of our company in Australia.
What do you dislike most about the IT industry?
I can honestly say there is nothing I dislike about this industry. I don't think I would have been working in an industry for more than 16 years if I had any dislikes.
What will be the 'next big thing' in the industry?
I would have to say the convergence of technologies would be the next big thing - the ability for all devices in the home to communicate and share information. At Netgear we're seeing this convergence occurring at close quarters. Technologies such as Powerline, where consumers are using power cabling in the home to transmit data where wireless won't reach, and the increasing take-up of NAS in the home and the popularity of media streamers such as our EVA8000 which enables the user to play digital content anywhere in the home, mean users are able to facilitate this convergence right now.
What is the main focus for your company this year?
One of the key focuses for Netgear this year and beyond is our range of ProSafe business products. We are looking to better support our SMB partners by investing in more resources to empower them to better promote and support these products.
What do you do when you are not at work?
I have various interests, including AFL football, playing a round of golf and woodworking. Working with wood is great and it's rewarding to create some really attractive and functional pieces of furniture. So far I've created beds for both of my kids and a coffee table that sits proudly in my living room. But my most recent activity away from work is coaching my son's under-10 soccer team. It has definitely been one of my most rewarding experiences.
Do you have a favourite travel destination?
I have been very fortunate and have been able to travel to various parts of the world - from the US to Europe and throughout Asia. I would have to say Europe is my favourite destination. And being of Greek descent, I have to say Greece and its islands are a must-see. In our most recent trip there, we visited Mykonos and Santorini. The food, the culture and the crystal clear beaches are something you never forget.
Do you like gadgets?
I definitely do. I recently had an electrician install additional power points around my home to cater for all my toys. My favourite gadget at the moment would have to be my personal video recorder (PVR) - I just need to find the time to watch all the shows I've recorded. My son is a big fan of the Xbox and he will often challenge me to a game or two. I am currently looking at adding an MP3 player to my collection - maybe even one that plays video that I can take with me while I travel.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
I definitely thought I possessed the talent to be a professional footballer (soccer). Unfortunately, I was the only one that thought so.
What is your biggest ambition?
My biggest ambition is only for my family and kids: to ensure they have every opportunity to succeed at whatever it is they want to do as they get older. From a professional perspective, I want to be able to contribute to Netgear's success and help raise the company's profile even more in Australia.
