Western Digital 250GB WD Scorpio

The vendor claims this is the highest capacity mobile hard drive for notebooks and portable storage devices in its class. The 2.5-inch Serial ATA hard drive employs perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to achieve the highest capacity available in a small form factor drive. It also features Western Digital's (WD) proprietary functionality to help ensure the drive uses less power and runs at a cooler operating temperature. The product is based on WD's WhisperDrive technology, which combines seeking algorithms to make it one of the quietest drives in its category, according to the company. There's also IntelliSeek technology built-in, which proactively calculates an optimum seek speed to eliminate hasty movement of the actuator that produces noise and requires power. The actuator's movement is controlled so the head reaches the next target sector just in time to read the next piece of information, rather than rapidly accelerating and waiting for the drive rotation to catch up. According to the vendor, this reduces power usage by more than 60 per cent compared with standard drives and lowers vibration. Built-in ShockGuard technology, firmware and hardware advancements protect the drive's mechanics and platter surface. With PMR technology, the magnetisation of each data bit is aligned vertically to the spinning disk, rather than longitudinally. This enables more data on a given disk than is possible with conventional longitudinal recording, and provides a platform for future expansion of hard drive densities. Other features include spin speeds of up to 5400rpm and a 12ms access time. Available in capacities from 40GB up to 250GB, the drives feature a 2MB or 8MB cache. The machines are designed for a range of portable devices such as notebooks, external storage, digital media players, GPS and navigation systems. The 250GB WD Scorpio also comes with a three-year limited warranty and is compatible with Windows Vista. Distributed by Achieva Technology, Synnex, TodayTech and Westan. RRP: 250GB - $299 Web:
