itX has launched its first online ordering system for hardware products and is developing a configuration engine for several software lines.
Resellers can now purchase Apple, Wyse, Snapgear, Raritan and Leostream products directly from the itX website. The new facilities will be followed by a Trend Micro configuration wizard and the ability to buy Clearswift software licenses online.
Distribution general manager, Greg Newham, said its expanding hardware range made online ordering a necessity.
"Most of our products are software-related and quite complex from a licensing perspective," he said. "They didn't lead themselves to an online ordering facility. But having gained Snapgear from our Dovetail acquisition and now Apple, we saw a need to address that part of the market.
"We are also trying to push our Apple business, especially given what has happened with Cellnet. And people in that market want to buy online.
"It's something other distributors have had for some time but up until now we never had a need for it."
The distributor expects about 50 per cent of these product sales will be done online.
"We've only just gone live and there's already a significant amount of business being done, particularly across the smaller accounts," Newham said. "We have been encouraged by that. I think this will drive a lot of our smaller transaction business."
itX was also investigating online configuration tools for some of its Sun volume products, he said.
To promote the new online facilities, itX is waiving credit card fees on all online transactions until September 30. Newham said it would introduce direct account facilities in the near future.
