Allied Telesyn adds Power-over-Ethernet to Layer 2+ Switch Family

New AT-8524PoE switch allows simplifies network infrastructure
deployments, cuts installation and maintenance costs.

SYDNEY, Australia – 24 February 2005: Allied Telesyn International (Australia), provider of refined
end-to-end networking technologies, has announced the availability of its AT-8524PoE Layer 2+ switch – a 24-port Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) solution with 2 expansion bays. This POE capability allows for simpler network infrastructure deployments – particularly for voice, security and powered devices – and significantly decreases installation and maintenance costs.

PoE allows the connection and powering of devices from switch ports without the need for local outlets at each remote PoE device. The AT-8524POE meets all 802.3af standards for Power-over-Ethernet and, unlike some competitive solutions, can provide full 15.4 watt power to all 24 ports simultaneously. A redundant power supply option is available to ensure maximum availability.

“The 8524POE switch is ideal for voice-over-IP, wireless access points and IP security cameras,” said Mark Jackson, Managing Director of Allied Telesyn (Australia). “It gives you Layer 2-4 intelligence, enhanced security at the access edge, and it streamlines your network architecture, all at a compelling price point.”

This new model rounds out Allied Telesyn’s line of five enhanced-security 8500 series switches. Featuring AlliedWareTM technology for deep packet examination, the 8500 series offers enhanced stacking ability for centralised management, and Layer 2 redundancy in the form of IEEE 802.1s Multiple STP, 802.1D Spanning Tree, 802.1w Rapid STP and 802.3ad Link Aggregation.

All five 8500 series models are configured to detect six types of business-crippling Denial of Service attacks, with programmable Access Control Lists (ACLs) to expand network protection. The 8500 series features Tiered Security, which complements WAN firewall and PC anti-virus programs and fortifies the network against malicious attacks.

In addition to Layer 2-4 intelligence, the 8500 series uses authentication features such as IEEE 802.1x (Port Based Network Access Control) and Radius/TACACS+. Each switch is also pre-programmed to detect six well-known DoS attacks: SYN Flood, SMURF, Land, Teardrop, Ping of Death and IP Options.

“The 8500 series gives you Layer 2 to Layer 4 intelligence in a Layer 2 switch,” said Mark Jackson. “It’s part of our very aggressive line of end-to-end IP solutions. 8500s are ideal for workgroups and MTUs, because they deliver increased security and advanced QoS to the edge, in a Layer 2+ package with a very cost-effective price point.”

The 8500 series of switches complement a network where aggregation and core layers have migrated successfully to Gigabit Ethernet – providing an easy-to-manage, cost-effective, intelligent solution at the LAN edge. Expansion modules are interchangeable, providing cost-savings for network upgrades or re-designs.

Allied Telesyn products are backed by a complete range of technical support options, including 24/7 web and phone support, professional services and in most cases, a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Allied Telesyn products can be purchased directly, or via leading value-added resellers, e-commerce sites, and direct marketers.
