Australian Monitor Market Picks up Following Supply Shortage, Says IDC

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, 2nd July, 2007 - IDC has recently released its latest analysis of the Australian PC monitor market, with the Q1 2007 analysis painting a relatively healthy picture for the beginning of the 2007. Shipments displayed growth in most areas as the market grew 6.7% sequentially and 11.7% Over Q1 2006.</p>
<p>"The Australian PC monitor market out performed initial expectations with both OEM and branded players revelling in its success and achieving sequential gains," said Lily Lin, IDC Senior Analyst, PC Hardware.</p>
<p>Analysis from IDC cites the following factors that shaped the monitor market:</p>
<p>1) Intense Competition - There was intense competition in the PC monitor market in 1Q'07. To outdo the branded monitor players, OEM vendors offered more competitive prices and bundled larger-sized LCD monitors with desktops. However branded vendors were up to the challenge as they took advantage of adequate supply to pursue highly aggressive pricing strategies in order to meet their sales targets, making LCD monitors even more affordable to end-users. Competitive prices only helped to fuel an already strong consumer market as promotions, largely driven by Vista, created significant demand. Vendors also sought other segments for growth in the commercial space through medical monitors and large information displays, among others.</p>
<p>2) You can only sell it if you have it - LCD panel shortages, the bane of the market in the previous quarter, were somewhat eased in Q1 07 for many vendors, allowing strong growth in the 19in. and 22in. sizes. With adequate supply many vendors were able to fulfil both demand left over from Q4 06 as well as the newly generated demand in Q1 07 helping to drive the market forward.</p>
<p>3) Rapid Growth in Portables PCs - However, it wasn't all sunshine for the monitor market as notebooks continued to cannibalise desktop sales in 1Q'07. The growing proportion of notebooks in the total PC market has a negative impact on monitor-attach ratios and future PC replacement cycles. While there is an evident trend for certain notebook users to purchase standalone monitors to use via a docking station or for a dual-monitor function, this trend is not prevalent enough to reverse the decline in monitor-attach ratios.</p>
<p>"Samsung finished the quarter in the top position with 18.7% share of the branded market while Viewsonic jumped to the second place with 17.4% share. Meanwhile, LG Electronics climbed to third place accounting for 16.6% of all branded monitor shipments in the quarter. Rounding out the top 5 were Acer and BenQ with 9.8% and 8.6% share respectively," said Lily Lin, IDC Senior Analyst, PC Hardware.</p>
