Hostworks accelerates Web apps

Hostworks has been given the nod by Citrix as an application networking group partner. The appointment gave the vendor a new route to market for its NetScaler Web application accelerator, channel development manager, Dean Vaughan, said.

"Hostworks provides us with access to customers that we wouldn't necessarily be dealing with," he said. "An organization wanting Web-based applications hosted, for example, wouldn't come to a traditional licensing company because they're looking for specialist skills and knowledge like those they find at Hostworks."

Citrix's NetScaler is a load balancing tool which is deployed in front of application servers. It can reduce processing overheads on application and database servers and is aimed at reducing hardware and bandwidth costs. Hostworks director of sales and marketing, Klaus Bartosch, said its ability to offer NetScaler would help expand relationships with some of its customers.

"Our customer growth has reached a point where these technologies become relevant to their businesses - albeit transparently," he said. "Our customers tend to leave it to our company's expertise and processes, which is why we've chosen bigger and better technologies as customer needs and demands have increased."

Examples of where NetScaler would assist Hostworks customers include dealing with unexpectedly high demand for streaming media, Bartosch said.

Hostworks clients include Network Ten, ninemsn,, SBS, Seek, Southern Cross View and

"NetScaler has been a recent deployment and we currently have three customers using it," Bartosch said.

"This will grow to be many more over the next 6-12 months as they're all reaching a point of evolution in their business where this makes sense."
