Strong growth prompts value-added distributor to start international operations

Buoyed by strong growth across its Australian operations, value-added distributor, Uptime Distribution, has kicked off its international plans in New Zealand. Managing director, Tony Geagea, said the time was ripe for expansion.

"We've set up a very stable operation that's centralised in Sydney and has been tried and tested in other markets such as Perth," he said. "The economic status of New Zealand, the types of business there and the geography is not too dissimilar to Australia.

"There are also synergies with customers that have branch offices in New Zealand. And we have channel partners plus the support structure for customers that are international. So it was a natural progression for us."

Uptime NZ will initially be manned by two support engineering staff as well as a country manager, and backed by the Sydney team. It will offer a range of value-added services, including onsite demos, pre-and post-sales support, proposal writing and tender responses.

All of the distributor's existing vendors had backed the move into NZ and Asia, Geagea said. These include founding vendor partner, Mitel, along with Expand Networks. The next destinations on Uptime's list are India and Singapore.

"We're very close to finalising support in India and developing operations as well as a sales front," Geagea said. "Singapore is also almost ready so the launch could be simultaneous."

The expansion plan comes on the back of 526 per cent year-on-year growth over the past two years, Geagea claimed. Most of the investment funding for expansion came out of its own pocket. Uptime has 80 staff and 200 resellers across Australia.
