EqualLogic Strengthens Integration for Microsoft Environments

New PS Series Software adds Smart Copy for data protection, recovery of Microsoft SQL Server databases and NTFS file systems

Sydney, Australia — July 17, 2007—EqualLogic® today announced PS Series Software enhancements that deliver rapid copies of Microsoft application and file system data. The new Smart Copy function, standard with PS Series storage arrays, allows IT administrators of Microsoft Windows to improve the speed and reliability of database and file recovery and testing operations. Smart Copy extends the PS Series host integration capabilities to reduce the amount of time IT administrators spend managing and protecting Windows-based business applications.

The new Smart Copy capability is included with the PS Series Auto-Snapshot Manager. It leverages the PS Series storage array to produce rapid, host-integrated snapshots, clones and replicas of business applications to help IT administrators improve backup, recovery, maintenance and testing procedures. The new feature maintains EqualLogic’s tight integration both with Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) functionality for application consistency and with the leading third-party backup solutions for best-of-breed backup capabilities.

As the fastest-growing major relational database management system according to IDC, Microsoft SQL Server has become an increasingly important IT element for enterprises of all sizes, supporting a vast range of business-critical applications. “Our customers require strict data integrity, high availability and I/O performance,” said Kim Saunders, senior director of SQL Server marketing at Microsoft Corp. “It is critical that their data be protected and stored on scalable, reliable storage solutions. EqualLogic’s iSCSI-based PS Series storage delivers enhanced performance for transactional SQL Server environments. With Smart Copy, it is offering more options for customers looking for a smooth, safe and quick recovery process.”

With Smart Copy, system administrators can eliminate hours of work that less-integrated storage systems require to recover a large business application environment after corruption or loss or to create copies of databases for testing and development. As part of the PS Series Software core feature set, Smart Copy can be used by IT administrators at no extra cost and incorporated with replication deployments.

E-chx, a premier small business payroll outsourcing company, uses EqualLogic PS Series storage to support its key Microsoft SQL Server-based application. “We constantly test our payroll system, so taking production SQL snapshots to our development environment easily with Smart Copy saves a lot of time,” said Ron Whitling, senior systems engineer. “Plus, we can do database recovery without paying tens of thousands of dollars in extra software fees. After experiencing the cost and complexity of EMC and NetApp Fibre Channel storage at previous jobs, my team was relieved that the EqualLogic SAN’s performance was just as good for our databases and it was easy to manage.”

Eric Schott, EqualLogic’s senior director of product management, said, “Copying, restoring and testing business applications is a common day-to-day task that occupies a considerable amount of IT administrator time. Giving IT staff more intelligent and automated tools that simplify these processes can facilitate faster, more successful data restores and speed up application development cycles. Smart Copy is another feature in the EqualLogic’s comprehensive toolset that eases storage management by reducing time spent on lengthy manual operations.”

EqualLogic also announced a PS Series Software enhancement that automates and simplifies the proper set up of multi-path input/output (MPIO) on Windows Server. The automated feature cuts the server administration time required to obtain the high-availability and performance benefits of MPIO with Windows-based servers.
