Emerson hits the road to greener data centres

 • 31 May, 2007 10:18

Emerson Network Power is in Canberra tomorrow to discuss the increasing importance of energy efficiency in the data centre. Part of its national roadshow ‘Enabling the Green Data Centre’, the whole day seminar includes presentations from Emerson and technology partners Cisco and Intel, as well as a showcase of the companies’ latest power, precision cooling and data centre products.

“The demand for power and cooling requirements in the data centre has increased considerably in the last 18 months,” says David Scott, Managing Director, Emerson Network Power Australia. “This can be attributed to the increasing consolidation of multiple servers and operating systems into single-chassis blade servers and the need for higher bandwidth applications, like VoIP and video-on-demand, due to the influence of convergence.”

“The green data centre really just means maximising the availability of the network and data using the most energy efficient designs with the lowest impact to the environment,” says Scott. “The greater energy efficiency of the data centre, the greener the data centre.”

Scott says data centres are consuming more and more energy, but they are doing it more efficiently than ever before. The real issue, he says, is that demand for computing power is doubling every four to five years. To address this demand, data centres are becoming larger and more densely populated, and therefore require more energy.

“Data centre equipment, servers for example, need only a fraction of the power they actually use so millions of dollars are being wasted every year. That’s why technology like virtualisation, which claims back some of that wasted power, is so popular. It saves on the cost of unused power by shutting off servers that aren’t needed anyway.”

Following the Canberra event Emerson and its partners are taking the series across the Tasman to Auckland on June 8.
