EMC has updated its ControlCenter Storage Resource Management (SRM) product which will allow partners to have a better ability to manage virtualised storage environments.
EMC marketing manager, Clive Gold, said SRM was about having a complete view of all the storage in an environment - no matter who made it. He said EMC had added a few key improvements with version 6 to make it easier for users.
"When you go into a virtualised environment, what people don't realise is it is going to break their management tools," Gold said.
He said most of the management tools sit on the server side. Typically, users could see a server which was virtualised but they couldn't see through it.
"This tool allows you to see all the way through the virtualised server to the resources that are attached to it [in the physical layer]," he said. "That is important for the channel because they are the people are out there doing virtualisation."
Gold said the cross-vendor features of the new software were also important.
"Where the partners come into it is in that ability to control the different hardwares; they become the middle point because they are vendor agnostic," he said. "They have become the trusted suppliers that can go to guys and say 'hold on, you want to manage this one layer up. You don't want to keep using the vendor-specific tools that only manage their pieces of hardware'. This ControlCenter will take you up the layer and allow you to have one way to manage all these vendors."
Gold said the updated SRM product supported the SMI-S 1.1, SNIA standard, giving users the ability to control and monitor any hardware device that supports the standard.
