Sony has announced the new 700 series optical writer which supports dual layer DVD recording. The DRU700A (internal) and DRX700UL (external) drives will store almost twice the capacity of previous models while maintaining full backward compatibility. With dual layer, Sony says that consumers will no longer have to reduce their recording times, remove features or span recordings across multiple disks due to lack of storage space. The 700 series provides writing support for the upcoming DVD+VR (video recording) format and for DVD-9 disks with 2.4X DL+R performance. Write speeds for DVD+R and DVD-R are now 8X while DVD+RW and DVD-RW are 4X. CD burning speeds are now 40X writing and 24X rewriting. The 700 series is bundled with Nero’s Nero Burning ROM/Express software and is available June (internal) and July (external) from Tech Pacific, Bluechip Infotech, MMT, J Mills, Edsys, BCN and Altech.
RRP: $349 (internal), $549 (external).
