ProCurve Networking by HP Speeds Government Efficiency, Prepares Local Council for Future Network Applications

Hinchinbrook Shire Council chooses ProCurve switches to clear bottlenecks and speed LAN traffic

Melbourne, Australia, 1 June, 2004 - ProCurve Networking by HP today announced that it has been selected to provide a new switch infrastructure to North Queensland-based Hinchinbrook Shire Council. Based on the ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture, the new infrastructure will improve current traffic flow for the Council, and will future-proof the network for later advanced application deployment.

Leading Solutions, ProCurve's largest exclusive business partner in Australia, worked with the Hinchinbrook Shire Council to replace its existing 10/100 Mbps Ethernet switches with a range of switches from ProCurve to alleviate data bottlenecks on its network. Hinchinbrook Shire Council selected the HP ProCurve Switch 5308xl, 2650, 2524 and 2512.

"Over the last few years HP has really shone with devices installed here at the Council. The ProCurve switches have proven to be no different," said Colin Valinoti, information technology manager, Hinchinbrook Shire Council. "That's why the Council selected ProCurve equipment to help run our network.

"Since we commenced using HP servers, we have received excellent sales and customer after-sales service from Leading Solutions," said Valinoti. "We have a real trust relationship there -- we recognised the quality of our HP printers and servers, and we already knew we could depend on Leading Solutions -- so when it came to network switching, Hinchinbrook Shire Council was comfortable that this was a good business decision."

The Hinchinbrook Shire Council works with a budget of approximately $18 million ($11 million of this being rate-revenue based), and employs 155 locals to carry out the day-to-day function of providing services to the Hinchinbrook community. Under the current Road Register, for example, the Council maintains 706km of roads and streets, and operates and maintains about $40 million of water and sewerage infrastructure.

"Customers like the Hinchinbrook Shire Council are electing to install ProCurve networking equipment to affordably improve current network performance," said Mark Berends, marketing manager, ProCurve Networking by HP, Australia. "At the same time, they depend on us to provide a unique combination of compelling features, return on IT investment and reliability that will support their efforts to grow in the future. Local governments, in particular, are attracted by our lifetime warranty as it means that any future repairs won't have to come out of future budgets. ProCurve provides the complete solution that makes us the trusted partner that they turn to for network upgrades."

The Council plans to explore a voice-over-IP solution for its telephone network as part of its IT Operational Plan once the current telecommunication system is superseded. In addition, future budget provisions will be sought to acquire infrastructure that will include enhanced switch technology to accommodate additional servers in the Local Server Farm. This will ensure that the Council continues to reap the performance benefits of its fast, future-proofed solution.

The ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture is the only business network solution of its kind, offering a single network strategy that provides a unified holistic approach to secure, mobile, multi-service networks. The ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture future proofs the network by simultaneously supporting the critical technology growth areas of security, mobility, and convergence.
