Sydney-based distributor, itX, has started pre-installing Windows Server 2003 on Sun x86 servers to make the hardware more attractive to resellers straight out of the box.
Marketing communications manager, Paul Sadler, said the first box with Windows on-board was shipped this month. itX has spent the past six months negotiating with Microsoft to get approval to OEM the software.
"The Sun hardware supports operating systems such as Solaris, Windows and Linux, so we saw an opportunity to ship it to resellers with Windows already installed," he said.
Sadler said pre-installing Windows made it more efficient and easy for resellers to take on the Sun hardware because they didn't have to configure it themselves.
"The Sun hardware is really good - it's fast and energy efficient," he said. "Pre-installing Windows gives our resellers the ability to compete with hardware from the likes of HP, IBM and Dell."
Sadler said the bundle was also timely given some companies were currently looking to upgrade from Windows Server 2000.
"If companies are having to upgrade, it gives resellers a chance to get Sun hardware in front of them," he said. A base model Sun x86 server running Windows Server 2003 would retail through resellers at around $3056 which includes one year's support.
