Altech Computer's newly appointed sales manager, John Robinson, has highlighted the mass merchant channel and security as two key areas of opportunity for the distributor. Robinson, who was once the country manager for AMD, slipped into the seat vacated by national sales manager, Kevin Hartin, in December.
He said he would take a careful look at the distributor's sales structure and at what strategic lines of business it could add into the mix.
"I'm taking it all in right now. It [Altech] has pretty good infrastructure that doesn't need overnight surgery," he said. To grow to the levels we'd like to reach in 18 months from now, however, we will need to see a quantum leap.
"I have a lot of things up my sleeve and it really is 'watch this space' at the moment.
"However, but Antony Sheen has given me some reign here. Kevin also put in a lot of hard work and some good things to build on."
Particular attention would be put on the distributor's mass merchant business over the next 18 months, he said. Security and surveillance products was another growth area.
Although best known for his role with AMD, Robinson was most recently country manager of Anthology Solutions - the troubled vendor of the Yellow Machine storage device.
The local company closed down in September.
Jumping to Altech from a string of vendor-based roles provided an interesting insight into the distribution business, he said.
"The thing that I understand most from being on the vendor side is that I know what they look for: mindshare from their partners," he said.
"While it's important to communicate with customers, it's also important to communicate with vendors so they know they're getting bang for buck."
