Kingston Technology co-founder, John Tu, has been portrayed as a high school teacher's benefactor in a new Hollywood film.
Called Freedom Writers, the movie is about Erin Gruwell, who helped to motivate at-risk teens with real-life experiences. It is based on the best selling book, The Freedom Writers Diary.
Along with buying computers for the students, Tu also helped organise trips to Auschwitz and Bosnia, destinations the students had read about while studying books such as The Diary of Anne Frank and Zlata's Diary.
The film took six years to make. It stars Academy Award winner, Hilary Swank, as Gruwell. Tu looked understandably impressed when he met her recently. It hits cinemas on March 22.
