MS and HP partner for SMB server summit

Microsoft, HP and Trend Micro have joined forces to create their first combined reseller summit. The series of one-day events, which begin touring the country this week, is aimed at educating the channel on how to deliver server technology solutions to the SMB market.

Microsoft infrastructure server project manager, David Allinson, said although the software giant and HP had engaged on various reseller events in the past, the new summit will be the first time the two have worked in tandem to bring comprehensive SMB solutions to the reseller community.

"We have usually marketed our Microsoft SBS Server 2003 and HP SMB server bundles through our distribution channels," he said.

Allinson said the new summit was part of Microsoft's plans to move beyond providing the operating system to building the full solution.

HP marketing manager for industry standard servers, Angus Jones, said HP had begun actively promoting Microsoft's SBS product with its ProLiant range of server products in January this year.

"The SBS Server software was developed on an HP ProLiant platform in the first place," he said. "The products just work together."

The summit, which begins in Perth on Thursday and concludes in Brisbane on December 7, will feature technical and sales tracks running concurrently. The sales forums will include tips from some of the software giant's existing Microsoft Value Partners (MVPs) on ways to sell server solutions to small businesses, from CRM and retail opportunities, to mobility tips and tricks. The technology sessions will begin with ways of identifying the right server solution for customers, and work through to migration strategies.

To coincide with the main event, Microsoft will hold its quarterly Readiness Partner Day to provide updates on its latest products and announcements, including Windows XP Media Center Edition and Virtual Server. An event specifically for ISV partners is also scheduled to run the day after each reseller summit.

Microsoft has also launched an NT migration campaign, offering resellers rebates for every copy sold of SBS bundled with a ProLiant server platform. A $10,000 prize will also be awarded to one end-user of the bundled products.

Resellers from all three vendors are invited to attend. More information, including dates for the Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane events, are available at: http://www.microsoft.com/australia/partner/events/partnerbriefings/summit.aspx
