Former AMD country manager, John Robinson, has joined Sydney-based distributor, Altech Computers. He slips into the seat vacated by national sales manager, Kevin Hartin, in December.
Robinson said he would take a careful look at the distributor's sales structure and at what strategic lines of business it could add to the mix.
"I'm taking it all in right now. It has a pretty good infrastructure that doesn't need overnight surgery," he said. "To grow to the levels we'd like to reach 18 months from now, however, we will need to see a quantum leap.
"I have a lot of things up my sleeve and it really is 'watch this space' at the moment, but Antony Sheen has given me some rein here. Kevin also put in a lot of hard work and clearly did some good things to build on."
Particular attention would be placed on the distributor's mass merchant business over the next 18 months, he said. Security and surveillance products were also highlighted as a growing area.
Although best known for his role with AMD, Robinson was most recently country manager of Anthology Solutions - the troubled vendor of the Yellow Machine storage device. The local subsidiary closed down in September.
Jumping to Altech from a string of vendor-based roles provided an interesting insight into the distribution business, he said.
"The thing that I understand most from being on the vendor side is that I know what they look for: mindshare from their partners," he said. "While it's important to communicate with customers, it's also important to communicate with vendors so they know they're getting bang for buck. Among everything else we've got going on, I'll be ensuring that we are still doing that with all our vendors at Altech."
