EMC to boost midrange storage

New storage array features both iSCSI and Fibre Channel capability

EMC is expected to introduce on Feb. 20 a midrange storage array that is designed for workgroup or departmental use and features both iSCSI and Fibre Channel capability.

The smallest of EMC's Clariion arrays, the CX3 Model 10 (CX3-10), allows customers to consolidate their storage within the same system and upgrade it to other CX arrays as needs grow. The CX series arrays scale from 365GB to 239TB in a single system.

The CX3 Model 10 scales to a maximum capacity of 30GB and supports RAID levels 0, 1, 1/0 and 3.5 for redundancy. It features 2G-bit/sec cache memory.

The CX3 Model 10 uses the same UltraScale architecture and the FLARE operating System as other CX3 arrays. The UltraScale architecture makes use of dual controllers, each of which can access every drive in the array.

It also features four 4G-bit/sec Fibre Channel and four 1G-bit/sec iSCSI ports for connectivity to storage-area networks or Gigabit Ethernet networks and can be deployed with a network-attached storage gateway in Ethernet environments. It is backward-compatible to 2G-bit/sec Fibre Channel. According to sources, a Fibre Channel-only array can be configured, if desired.

Further, the CX3 Model 10 can support as many as 512 connections to as many as 64 host computers and allows from five to 60 Fibre Channel or Serial ATA disk drives to be intermixed for data lifecycle management purposes. The previous Model 20 featured as many as 120 Fibre Channel or Serial ATA drives. Intermixing Fibre Channel and Serial ATA drives in the Clariion CX3 Model 10 is possible through the use of Emulex's embedded bridge technology.

The CX3 Model 10 works with EMC's SnapView storage software, which provides full volume copies of data as well as snapshots. It also works with EMC's Replication Manager, EMC's PowerPath, MirrorView and EMC RecoverPoint.

Replication Manager/SE allows point-in-time restoration and creation of Microsoft Virtual Shadow Copy Service replicas. PowerPath allows load balancing and multiple path connectivity to improve performance and availability. MirrorView is software that provides for the asynchronous or synchronous replication of data between arrays or sites. RecoverPoint is EMC's continuous-data-protection product, which also provides for remote replication.

In addition, the CX3 Model 10 supports EMC RepliStor, which enables file-based local and remote replication in Windows environments.

The array is managed with the Navisphere Quality of Service Manager, which allows users to create performance targets for applications, tiers or storage or type of disk.

The CX3 Model 10 includes a standard three-year hardware warranty. Pricing is not immediately available.

In addition, as soon as this month EMC will also introduce Geographically Dispersed Disaster Restart, a product that competes with IBM's GDPS and provides an automated disaster restart and a guarantee of safe failover for unplanned or planned outages.

The company will also roll out RecoverPoint/SE for its Clariion CX and CX3 UltraScale Series systems, which provides asynchronous replication between Clariion arrays and supports Windows hosts and as much as 4TB of replication capacity.
