Local Microsoft boss vamooses to the US

New managing director by February

Microsoft is looking for a local managing director to replace Steve Vamos as he moves to the company's online division in Seattle in April next year.

Vamos' new role as vice president for international online services group places him in charge of developing non-US Microsoft Internet projects such as MSN and which have been overshadowed by mature sectors such as Office and Vista.

Microsoft online services group senior vice president Steve Berkowitz, who will be Vamos' new boss, said he will bring valuable experience to the division.

"Steve brings the ideal mix of experience and passion to this important growth area for Microsoft," Berkowitz said. "His experience in the technology industry, and as CEO of Ninemsn equip him very well to lead our international efforts."

Vamos will remain a board member of Ninemsn, of which he was CEO until acquiring his last position in 2003, and will also continue as founding president for the Australia Society for Knowledge Economics which develops business productivity within knowledge base resources.

Vamos said his 25 years of experience and interest in Web technologies will position him centrally in the online sector.

"It blends and builds on the many experiences I have had during my 25 years in the technology industry, and puts me at the heart of Microsoft's efforts in the online services space," Vamos said adding he is enthusiastic about the new role as has "enormous interest and passion for the possibilities of the Internet".

Microsoft is expected to name a replacement by February next year.
