Wireless Tech gets into surveillance ACTi

Niche distributor, Wireless Tech, has struck its first surveillance hardware agreement with Taiwanese vendor, ACTi Corporation.

The company will have distribution rights for ACTi's range of MPEG-4 IP-based surveillance cameras, transcoders, video servers and DVR appliances. Wireless Tech sales and applications consultant, Eric Gagnaux, said it had previously sourced video cameras from Sony on an ad hoc basis.

"We wanted to have a distribution agreement with a company we could build a good relationship with," he said. "ACTi products use Sony chipsets and lenses. They are also comparable to Sony's range but at a better price point."

While ACTi worked with other channel partners locally, Gagnaux claimed it was its first to concentrate on dedicated wireless infrastructure.

"We want to offer resellers a complete solution based on wireless. We had everything ready for VoIP but were missing the IP-based surveillance link," he said.

Wireless Tech planned to bundle the equipment with its Motorola Canopy point to multi-point products, as well as with its mesh technology offering.

"A good thing about ACTi is that it offers its management software free for up to 16 cameras, which is an attractive proposition for us," Gagnaux said. "Often we've had rollouts with 6-8 cameras, and adding $2000 worth of software on top makes it expensive."

ACTi sales account manager, Leanne Hsu, said the Wireless Tech partnership would be complementary to its existing agreements with Alloys International and NESS Security.

"Alloys International covers the IT channel, NESS Security has expertise in CCTV, and Wireless Tech owns the wireless market," she said. "They have different customers and will be focusing on different solutions."
