Customers Are Empowered to Reduce Risk and Costs Associated with Managing Unstructured Data

AUSTRALIA, Sydney-4 December 2006-Enterprises today continue to grapple with improving their data management in an effort to reduce their legal and business risks, while controlling the growing cost of managing unstructured data. To help customers address these needs today Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) announced three NetApp® Information Server 1200 (IS1200) platforms: the IS1200-FRM (File Reporting and Migration), the IS1200-SA (Search Appliance), and the IS1200-ECS (Enterprise Content Services). All are built from the core IS1200 architecture, and share a common framework that provides customers with visibility into their data at as granular a level as required, at the metadata or full content level. Each product is optimised to meet distinct customer challenges around reducing business and compliance risk, reducing storage and data-management costs, and searching quickly through large storage repositories to help customers find a “needle in the haystack.” The new products will be available in the United States and Europe in December 2006 and will be rolled out globally in February 2007. Visit <http:> for product details.</http:>

The new IS1200 platforms provide customers with simplified management via effective data-management processes to help develop highly effective policies aligned with the business value of data. Customers can also better control risk with improved control over their unstructured data, providing intelligence and consistency to policy-based search, move, delete, and/or copy operations across the enterprise. In addition the IS1200 platforms help customers control the growing cost of storage through implementing tiered storage, reduce costs of actions such as data discovery, and address adherence to regulatory compliance.

New Functionality

*The IS1200-FRM is designed for high-performance generation of reports to provide insight into file data and enable an automated, tiered storage architecture. With automated migration capabilities, customers can take action on data based on file attributes and migrate files to the most appropriate storage. Additionally, storage reports will enable storage cost allocation to appropriate groups within the enterprise.

*The IS1200-SA is optimised to help customers with file indexing, search, and restoration of individual files from file backup systems. This functionality is critical for electronic data discovery for litigation because it dramatically reduces the time and costs by “quick searching” on an enterprise level.

*The IS1200-ECS offers a more sophisticated solution for maintaining data privacy and enabling and automating compliance policies. It offers full content-aware classification, search, migration, and compliance capabilities. When combined with NetApp Retention Manager software the IS1200-ECS integrates seamlessly with NetApp SnapLock® to keep stored compliance data unalterable for the appropriate retention period based on corporate policies and relevant regulations.

Devon Energy Corporation is one of the larger independent oil and gas producers and independent processors of natural gas and natural gas liquids in North America. Devon produces, archives, and manages 250 terabytes of storage with the NetApp IS1200 solution.

“The management and financial advantages of understanding how our storage infrastructure is being used are significant in how we think about our archive and compliance needs-these go hand in hand,” said Brad Lusk, Manager, BI&T Infrastructure & Desktop Services at Devon Energy. “Deploying intelligent data-management policies to more effectively utilise our storage has helped us achieve significant cost savings and confidence that our data is a useful asset to our business instead of a risk.”
“Customer data classification, migration, and discovery needs have evolved. This is the first family of products that address the requirement for full visibility into content to tackle related compliance and archiving needs,” said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Products and Alliances at Network Appliance. “Our file reporting, data classification, migration, search, and compliance solutions holistically help customers control the complexity, cost, and company risk related to unstructured data. NetApp is once again providing customers with both elegant and cost-effective data classification and management solutions to meet their data management, archive, and compliance needs.”

The IS1200-FRM, IS1200-SA, and IS1200-ECS are the latest products in the NetApp portfolio of IS1200 solutions. They join NetApp SnapSearch, Transparent Migration Manager, and Retention Manager software, which all run on the IS1200 platforms.
