IDC: Services key to MFD success

Resellers need to increase service and support offerings to remain competitive in the multifunction device (MFD) market, according to an IDC analyst. The market research firm has just reported on Q2. Analyst, Katarzyna Czubak, said the local MFD market had grown 14.7 per cent from the same period in 2005.

With the ever growing popularity of MFDs - which IDC defines as being copier-, printer- or fax-based - Czubak said businesses were increasingly looking for external print management.

"Companies are looking for services with their MFDs," she said. "Resellers that are only playing with hardware will find their opportunities becoming limited."

In Q2, IDC estimated 51.8 per cent of the local MFD market was printer-based, 40.3 per cent were copier-based units and 7.9 per cent fax-based units. Brand-wise, the top five MFD vendors by market share were HP (36.2 per cent), Samsung (17.6), Brother (16.9), Canon (14.8) and Lexmark (4.4).
