NCR Introduces Industry’s Smallest Full-Function Self-Checkout Solution at Retail Technology Expo

NCR FastLane™ Mini is designed for retail environments where space is at a premium

SYDNEY, 19 September 2006 - NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) has introduced its newest version of self-checkout – a “mini” full-function model ideal for space-constrained retail environments – at the three-day Retail Technology Expo at the Melbourne city convention centre.

Equipped with a full range of tendering options, NCR FastLane Mini is the smallest full-function self-checkout system on the market, allowing shoppers to scan, bag and pay for their purchases using cash, debit cards, credit cards or other electronic payment methods.

It features an intuitive touch-screen user interface, multimedia graphics, voice and visual prompts and a signature-capture pad for completing credit card transactions. It can also be equipped to accept coupons, deactivate electronic surveillance tags and provide Automated Teller Machine (ATM)–like functionality by dispensing cash back.

In the UK, NCR announced in July that Tesco, the largest deployer of self-checkout in Europe, had signed an agreement to install NCR FastLane Mini self-checkouts in more than 50 per cent of the front-end lanes at its Bishopsgate Metro store in London.

“One-third smaller than NCR’s Express FastLane model, the NCR FastLane Mini fits virtually any store layout, allowing even retailers with space restrictions to offer their customers the convenience of self-checkout,” said Geoff Evison, director of NCR self-service, Retail Solutions Division, Asia Pacific. “Adding cash acceptance functionality to the NCR FastLane Mini further extends NCR’s global self-checkout leadership, offering retailers unmatched flexibility with system configurations that have both an input conveyor belt and a take-away conveyor belt.”

The NCR FastLane Mini can also be deployed as a self-checkout alternative in smaller convenience stores, high footfall specialty stores, pharmacies, office supply stores, department stores and boutiques.

Consumers around the world are increasingly turning to self-checkout at supermarkets and other retail outlets to avoid long queues and get their shopping done more quickly. More importantly, many shoppers prefer the privacy self-checkout offers, as well as allowing them to shop at their own pace.
