Sydney-based technical support business, Gizmo, has completed its acquisition of the five year-old Melbourne-based firm, Nerds for Hire. The value of the acquisition wasn't disclosed.
The deal is the start of a national expansion for the newly-born Gizmo, with Brisbane expected to be the next come online, CEO, Brett Chenoweth, said.
"So far we can send techs to someone's house in Sydney and now Melbourne following the acquisition, but the phone support service is already national," he said. "We'll look at bringing Brisbane on before the end of the year - probably November - and we'll also be rebranding Nerds for Hire as Gizmo in the next month or so."
Launched in 2001, Nerds for Hire has 10 highly-branded cars in Melbourne, while Gizmo has a dozen in Sydney. Chenoweth plans to triple his number of mobile service technicians - or Gizmotechs - before Christmas. They will be hired as employees, rather than contractors.
"We're taking the employee route because we want to offer a high quality of customer service," he said. "We can control that quality through an employee model by investing money in recruitment and training."
Gizmo offers technicians to troubleshoot issues with Windows XP-based PCs in addition to hardware upgrades. It currently doesn't support Apple Macs or businesses with more than five PCs, but there are future plans to include these services, Chenoweth said.
