~ Leverages Hundreds Of Customer Engagements Worldwide And Deep Understanding Of Microsoft Technology ~

SYDNEY, Australia -- March 23, 2004 -- Avanade®, a premier technology integrator for Microsoft® solutions in the enterprise, today launched a suite of practical solutions, based on the company's assets and intellectual property, to help ensure that its customers' Microsoft platforms are secure.

Avanade's security solutions are an extension of the expertise it has accrued from hundreds of customer engagements and have been developed from the company's deep understanding of the capability of Microsoft technology, particularly within the enterprise.

With the ever-increasing need to deliver innovation on time to support corporate initiatives, the necessary security planning to ensure the safety and stability of an organisation's infrastructure is often rushed or overlooked altogether. Building a sound security program is paramount to business survival and is a continuous exercise that begins with a thorough assessment of risk and exposure to threats and vulnerabilities. The first step in building a sound security program is determining the current state of an organisation's infrastructure security.

The Avanade Security Assessment helps customers through a concise yet methodical review of their existing infrastructure to determine ways to verify and optimise the security of their Microsoft infrastructure. The assessment process develops a holistic view of an organisation, including aspects of people, process and technology. The final results provide an objective view of the security in the organisation and a prioritised list of recommended actions to re-mediate or enhance security to achieve the desired level based on an organisation's business objectives.

Software isn't perfect. It can break, fail or be exposed to one of the ever-increasing number of worms and viruses. As such, businesses need to implement patches or risk disruption to their critical infrastructure. Implementing patches often requires an inordinate amount of time and effort. This time often impacts on the IT department's ability to better service and provide value to its organisation.

The Avanade Patch Management Solution (see also separate media release below) combines Avanade's experience and Microsoft's security technology, proven tools, and best practices to help organisations manage and control patch distribution throughout the enterprise. The solution includes a patch management deployment guide that offers a consistent approach to change management and release management, architectural guidelines for optimal technical configuration, and a patch management operations guide that provides advice for scheduling routine tasks.

"The methodology, tools and best practices that make up the Avanade Patch Management Solution have proven extremely effective for customers -- and effective as part of our own internal security measures, too," said Darrell Ryman, Technology Fellow Asia Pacific for Avanade. "We've packaged these resources to help customers make the most of security capabilities built into technology such as Microsoft Operations Manager and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Customers get more value from their infrastructure investments and gain efficiency in their operations."

Users are often frustrated with the need to maintain different identities for different systems even though all of those systems run within the same organisation. As user identities proliferate, the costs of administering and maintaining multiple identity stores and their associated access privileges grow while the organisation's ability to ensure secure access shrinks. Overall productivity often drops as IT departments spend more time managing processes that could be automated.

The Avanade Identity and Access Management Provisioning Solution addresses these issues by combining a world-class technical solution with proven processes to rationalise complex account and security systems. By implementing technical solutions based on Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft Identity Integration Server, Avanade simplifies identity and integrates security across heterogeneous systems, resulting in reduced administrative cost and improved security to allow an organisation to concentrate on its customers' needs.

Organisations today can have hundreds or even thousands of mobile users working outside the security of its internal network. Every mobile user has the potential to introduce malicious technology to an organisation's corporate network. Few VPN solutions are available that can prevent an un-patched or unknowingly compromised device from connecting to an organisation's corporate network. This results in the organisation being put at risk of substantial financial loss by the introduction of a virus or worm before the patch distribution process can be completed for devices on the network.

The Avanade VPN Quarantine Solution, which is deployed alongside any firewall system, is based around Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004. It is designed to aid in protecting corporate networks and minimising the threat from malicious attack by providing and enforcing a "holding area" for users and computers that have not yet been verified as threat-free. Once verified as threat-free, the remote user is allowed access to available resources.
