Open source specialist, Open Channel Solutions (OCS), has been appointed sole supplier of backup software from US vendor, Syncsort.
The distributor's managing director, Con Fiamegos, said Syncsort had previously been represented in Australia by local reseller, Rosser Communications.
OCS will have access to Syncsort's Backup Express product, which offers data protection across clustered Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES) environments but can also work on most server platforms.
Fiamegos said the product was complementary to its existing stock of Novell-compatible software and tools.
"Being a big Novell distributor, we have a larger base of customers and can drive the business a lot harder," he said. "It'll also give the channel more confidence to deal with a distributor rather than a competing reseller."
The distributor is considering bundling Backup Express with its other vendor lines as well as Novell OES. These include Moonwalk, Bakbone, Sophos and NetLeverage.
Syncsort's other products, DMExpress and the Syncsort utility, would continue to be represented by Sydney-based integrator, Keylink Technology.
As well as working with Rosser, Fiamegos hoped to sign about a dozen partners to resell Backup Express. It plans to host information sessions in conjunction with Syncsort in the coming months.
"We will concentrate on Novell resellers initially. A lot of them will know the issues around OES and are probably selling other backup products," he said. "Those who know how to engineer and install backup solutions won't find this hard."
Licensing will be based on a combination of the customer's operating system environment, server set-up and required software components. Partners can also on-sell the vendor's round the clock support.
