Compaq is getting serious about networking.
After recently announcing that it would soon ship its first Gigabit Ethernet switches in Australia, the company has revealed that it is poised to appoint a network distribution partner in Australia.
Ian Harvey, Compaq business unit manager for communications products, told ARN that Compaq's desired image as a total solutions provider will depend largely on the companies ability to provide a proper end to end networking portfolio.
And it is looking for the right partner in Australia to help stamp the Compaq moniker on the corporate network.
Harvey would not say whether Compaq had as yet created a short list of possible partners but he said that Compaq's existing partners are to be educated in the deployment and support of the company's new networking solutions.
At the moment Compaq's most prestigious client in Australia is Qantas.
Harvey said that the Compaq networking solution will be based on Ethernet technologies and layer three switching.
The company is embracing Ethernet for the same reasons it has embraced NT - "both are set to swallow the desktop".
