Seemingly oblivious to continuing sniggers from the likes of Cisco, Bay and 3Com, Compaq remains committed to getting serious about networking.
After recently announcing it would soon ship its first Gigabit Ethernet switches in Australia, the company has revealed it is poised to appoint a network distribution partner in Australia.
Ian Harvey, Compaq business unit manager for communications products, told ARN that Compaq's desired image as a total solutions provider will depend largely on the company's ability to provide a proper end-to-end networking portfolio.
It is also looking for the right partner in Australia to help stamp the Compaq moniker on the corporate network.
Harvey would not say whether Compaq had already created a short- list of possible partners but he said Compaq's existing partners are to be educated in the deployment and support of the company's new networking solutions.
At the moment, Compaq's most prestigious client in Australia is Qantas.
Harvey said Compaq's networking solutions will be based on Ethernet technologies and Layer 3 switching.
