Conexus wins Mac virtualisation deal

Conexus is claiming its new range of products from US-based Mac virtualisation vendor, Parallels, will offer Apple resellers a plethora of new opportunities in the Mac space.

Managing director, David Murray, said it had been in discussions with Parallels for the past three months. The vendor had recently secured a round of venture capital funding that had allowed it to expand.

Conexus is its first local distributor. It has been in the software simulation game for several years, distributing products such as SoftPC from Insignia and Virtual PC from Connectix. Under the new agreement, the distributor will carry Parallel's complete range of software, incorporating its boxed Desktop for Mac product, as well as Workstation 2.1 for Windows and Linux and Compressor. The latter two would be available via electronic download.

The flagship product is the Mac virtualisation software, which allows users to toggle between several operating systems, such as Windows and Linux, while using a Mac OS X.

Murray said the simultaneous nature of the software had become possible because of Apple's decision to introduce Intel-based Mac systems.

"Users will be able to get applications for two operating systems. Previously, you had no choice without running Linux," he said. "SMBs are running Windows-based systems because they couldn't get the right applications for a Mac. You can now run anything. For example, they can drive products from Microsoft platforms, using standard mail messaging services they like while getting the benefits of a Mac."

As well as benefiting end-users, Murray said the software would give Apple resellers the opportunity to create a plethora of new solutions for Mac systems.

The Parallels software was complementary to Conexus' existing portfolio of Apple-compatible products and would suit its well-established base of resellers, he said.
