Alphawest Strengthens Capabilities and Customer Services

 • 31 May, 2006 10:31

Alphawest has announced that it will strengthen and enhance its capabilities across the business as part of its acquisition by Optus. This initiative consolidates the Optus Business Information Communication Technology (ICT) resources into Alphawest which will lead to driving revenue growth.

Optus, which is part of the SingTel Group, acquired Alphawest in November, 2005.

The changes will include the transfer of over 170 staff from the Integrated Business Systems (IBS) unit of Optus Business into the organisation. About 150 of these technology and business professionals will join Alphawest’s Technology Solutions and Managed Services Divisions, while the balance will be absorbed by other Alphawest business units. This move strengthens Alphawest’s ability to deliver complete ICT services, consulting, solutions and managed services offerings across Australia.

To better reflect its enhanced strengths, broader portfolio and national presence, the company’s three core lines of business have been reorganised and renamed. Alphawest’s three business units are now called:

· Managed Services – previously Business Continuity

· Technology Solutions – previously Infrastructure Solutions

· Business Solutions – previously Information Management

A number of senior managers have also been appointed to the new organisation. Reporting to Garry Henley, Alphawest’s Chief Executive Officer, the divisional leadership team has a new line-up:

Ian Smith has been appointed General Manager – Technology Solutions. Ian was previously in the Optus Business IBS team and has been instrumental in the success of the transformation project with Alphawest.

Stephen Wood, previously the General Manager of Alphawest’s large NSW operation, has been appointed General Manager – Business Solutions.

Completing the ICT line-of-business management team is John Sanger, who takes on the role of General Manager – Managed Services. John was previously National General Manager of Operations at Alphawest.

“These changes are a natural extension of the strategy behind Optus Network Pty Ltd’s acquisition of Alphawest and puts in place strong skills to grow the business,“ said Garry Henley, the Chief Executive Officer of Alphawest. “Alphawest was acquired to provide its specialised and proven ICT services expertise that Optus Business customers require. Now we are taking the next step – providing customers with a single point of contact for all of their IT and communications needs by consolidating the Optus Business IBS unit with Alphawest.

“We have created a single ICT business that combines the key elements of both Optus Business IBS and Alphawest. We took the time to analyse all business processes and customer requirements and re-aligned Alphawest accordingly. We are now able to respond more effectively and efficiently to all our customer’s ICT needs. The outcome of the acquisition mean that we are in a stronger position to provide real business value while minimising risk to address customer ICT issues,” he said.

Managed Services Scales Up Design and Operational Capabilities

A key asset now integrated into Alphawest from Optus Business IBS is the NSW based Enterprise Management Centre (EMC) which is a large network management centre that complements Alphawest’s existing Network Operating Centre (NOC) and National Service Centre.

John Sanger, General Manager - Managed Services, explained that the Managed Services Division has dramatically increased its remote network operations staff and design architects, more than tripling the current levels. This will enable a broader range of capabilities and services to be offered to new and existing clients.

“We will also be broadening our range of services by leveraging our ability to manage end-to-end networks, security and IP telephony, and increasing our investment in new innovative offerings. This will enhance our existing range of ICT outsourcing and fully managed end-to end solutions,” said Mr Sanger.

Technology Solutions Boosts Resources

Ian Smith, General Manager – Technology Solutions explained that existing Optus Business infrastructure integration practices will be combined with Alphawest’s resources to increase coverage and scale in IP communications, security, systems and storage solutions. This Division will also incorporate Optus Business’ market-leading IP Contact Centre. This will further extend Alphawest’s capability to provide end-to-end IP Telephony solutions for enterprise and corporate clients. Alphawest has the ability to leverage IP convergence with Optus, from carriage to network infrastructure, particularly around IP Telephony solutions, providing enhanced offerings for its customers.

Mr Smith said, “Customers will now have access to an extensive suite of ICT services and can partner directly with Alphawest and/or Optus to integrate telecommunications and IT requirements into a single solution. They will enjoy the convenience of dealing with a smaller, more agile ICT services company, backed by the strength of the Optus brand and balance sheet. Alphawest has an extensive national footprint and can deliver services across seven states and territories.”

Business Solutions Strengthens Vertical Focus

Stephen Wood, General Manager – Business Solutions, revealed there will be a review of the Division’s strategy in order to more closely align it with Alphawest’s core markets and to devise and deliver solutions that are strongly focussed on addressing business challenges within key vertical markets, such as banking and finance, insurance, professional services and government.

“The Business Solutions practice leverages critical information and automates essential processes to provide clients with a substantial business advantage,” said Mr Wood. “Our solutions enable clients to access information more easily, work more effectively, and realise revenues more quickly – resulting in organisations that are more responsive, more competitive, and ultimately, more successful.”
