Dimension Data has completed an integration of Microsoft software into the new Sydney offices of Leighton Contractors. The implementation unified network and IP telephony services for more than 500 staff.
With an office move from the suburb of St Leonards to Chatswood imminent, the integrator was asked to come up with proposals for a number of areas including telephony, DiData principal consultant, Jon Farrell, said.
"We had an existing relationship with Leightons, which was looking at a large refresh and building move," he said. "As part of that we were asked to look at the telephony environment - specifically around extending its capabilities."
The new infrastructure saw Microsoft Office System and Live Communications Server integrated with Cisco Call Manager via Genesys Enterprise Telephony Software.
The value of the implementation wasn't disclosed by either party.
According to Farrell, the new network enables users to initiate communication sessions from within Microsoft software including Office and Outlook. A user could, for example, see if a contact was available and then call, email or open an Instant Messenger session with one mouse click.
Farrell said educating users on the functionality of the new system was one of the major challenges of the implementation.
"It's a new concept to go into your email, look at an address and then make that person's phone ring," he said. "We also had to ensure the Active Directory was robust and fully functional."
