Nokia bundles security services into new network device

Nokia has launched a new device that bundles multiple security services into one box.

Finland's Nokia, best known for its mobile phones, also makes security devices, including a new product that bundles a range of multiple security services.

Under the term Unified Threat Management (UTM), Nokia has integrated several security services, including firewall, IPSec VPN (Internet Protocol Security virtual private network), SSL VPN (Secure Sockets Layer VPN), antivirus and intrusion prevention, into a new security appliance, the Nokia IP390 Firewall/VPN appliance, the company said earlier this week. The device is the first to support a bundle of security services that Nokia calls its Check Point VPN-1 UTM package.

The Nokia IP390 security device is available globally as a base system starting at $US6,995 per unit.

UTM is a new trend in security technology that combines multiple security services, which run in concert with one another, and add another layer of protection to a corporate network, Nokia spokeswoman Laurie Armstrong said in an e-mail on Wednesday.

Firewalls began with simple packet inspection, Armstrong said. Now they are inspecting deeper within typical packets to understand more about different types of traffic. As a result, firewalls, including the Nokia systems, are able to offload entire sessions to the antivirus engine to look for viruses or to an intrusion prevention engineered to detect an attack.

Given today's increasingly mobile workplace, businesses need to make sure that their networks are secure at all points, especially at remote sites and with employees on the move, Armstrong said. Nokia's UTM service is designed to meet these security needs.
