Ingram Micro is in the final stages of testing a portal that allows resellers to configure custom-made HP desktops and notebooks online.
Called TopConfig, the site is the result of a six-month collaboration between Ingram and HP. It is currently being used by 15 resellers.
Ingram Micro director of product management, Lorraine Cowan, said the site would officially be opened to more than 150 Ingram dealers on May 1.
"We saw the portal as a great opportunity to enhance the service we could offer resellers," she said. "There's certainly a good market for custom configured kit. HP and Ingram thought we could do a better job of making the experience easier."
Previously, Cowan said resellers chasing custom PCs and notebooks had to visit a HP site to configure the build required, save the details and then contact Ingram for a quote. The new portal, Cowan said, would speed up the process.
HP desktop product manager, Kevin Yap, said the vendor had brought the online configuration concept to Ingram after launching it in a number of European countries. The project was led by a HP team out of Singapore, assisted by local HP and Ingram staff.
"Our configurator is hosted on a dedicated server housed in Singapore and we tied this back into Ingram's site, which is hosted locally," he said. "Over the six months we had about 10 people working on the project, while there were about six or seven on Ingram's side."
