AWA Limited has replaces Service Solutions as national authorised service partner for Sun Microsystems.
The move could see AWA hire Service Solutions staff already trained on Sun hardware.
Sun Microsystems managing director of services, Grant Rickard, said the vendor had made a request for proposal (RFP) in September as the Service Solutions contract was drawing to a close.
"It took a while to get through as our selection procedure is a fairly lengthy process," he said. "We formally made our decision about a month ago."
The new service provider will deliver hardware support to Sun customer sites across the country, working in conjunction with Sun Support Services. AWA officially takes the reins in June.
Rickard said AWA's reach into regional areas had assisted it in winning selection. It has more than 160 service locations nationwide.
AWA chairman, John Dougall, said his company was in discussions with Service Solutions to bring across staff who had previously trained on Sun hardware. Existing AWA staff had just starting training.
"Negotiations aren't quite there yet, but the discussions are certainly well advanced," he said. "We would like to take as many Service Solutions staff as possible."
