Business voice solutions provider, Fast Track Communications, has wasted no time in deploying the Zultys WIP2 Wi-Fi phone which shipped to Australia this week and is available through the vendor's distributors, ChannelWorx and Anixter.
The WIP2 is a wireless mobile phone that aims to have all the features of a desktop phone and long battery life.
Available for $473, the WIP2 is based on open standards, runs on real time Linux and uses SIP for call control, making it compatible with any IP phone system using SIP standards. The phone also supports IEEE 802.11b and all applicable standards for VLANs and QoS to make it compatible with most networks.
Managing director of Fast Track Communications, Geoff Bednal, has just received his first shipment of the units and already has two deployments lined up for them.
One deployment for Addisons, a law firm of around 60, will start in the next week.
Bednal could not specify the other deployment due to a confidentiality agreement, but it will involve the refurbishment of a city building in August or September that Fast Track will be building a specialist solution for. It will include WIP2 phones for the mobile workforce of at least 20.
"All of the telephony and computing will be mobile and a lot of the equipment will need to be robust enough to handle outdoor weather," he said. "There will also be a lot of metal rigs involved which will present some challenges."
In addition to the full functionality he got from the WIP2 phone by being a Zultys reseller, Bednal said the phone was also appealing for its long talk time, good sound quality and battery life.
"There's also a very quick turn around with Zultys products if we need support or supplies, so we don't have to hold a huge stock level like we might have to with some other suppliers," he said.
Bednal also said that it made sense, as a reseller, to choose partners that had already done some interpretability testing between them. This was the case for Zultys and Fast Tracks wireless partner, Aruba.
A lot of hours can be burnt in figuring out interpretability, so it's handy to partner with people that have already put those hours in for us," he said. "If we can look at a white paper or call tech support instead of spending hours working it out, we will."
