Telstra buys Converged Networks to bolster CPE play

Telstra Business Systems (TBS) has purchased WA-based voice and data network provider, Converged Networks, in a bid to round out its coverage of the customer premise equipment (CPE) marketplace.

TBS is the carrier's CPE voice solutions subsidiary. Converged Networks was formerly its WA business partner. A Telstra spokesperson valued the deal at less than $6 million but said the acquisition was important because it enabled the telco to increase its presence in WA. It planned to rebrand Converged Networks in the months ahead.

Telstra previously acquired CPE provider, Damovo Australia, for $64.3 million in September 2004. The spokesperson said this deal had given it adequate coverage of most states but WA had required further attention.

Converged Networks boss, Phil Zappara, and co-owner, Hans Groot, have sold their stakes in the business but would remain as consultants to assist with transition.
