HiTech Distribution has completed an 18-month upgrade of its reseller website, with a new e-commerce portal now online and open for business.
The password-protected site is dramatically different to its predecessor, according to the SA-based distributor's marketing manager, David Hein.
"Our old site gave resellers the ability to look at pricing and that was pretty much it," he said. "In terms of live data, you knew if a product was in stock or on order, but not how many. There was no checkout process at all."
The new e-commerce site featured secure ordering and accurate stock quantities.
"We contracted a Web developer to do the navigational layout and PHP programming. Our managing director, Ian Vagg, worked wit h him to connect it to our back-end data and ensure the information was presented accordingly," Hein said.
The new site lists products, displays images, links to useful third-party sites and can generate quotes for resellers and their customers. Hein said the old site had attracted 100-200 unique users a day, from a reseller base of about 1500. He expected that number to grow considerably following the upgrade.
"Our resellers weren't using the old site often because they couldn't place orders online," he said. "Unless they desperately wanted to look up a price, they said it wasn't worth it."
