Klipsch THX Ultra2 Flagship speaker system

 • 13 June, 2006 11:25

Melbourne, VIC – June 2006 - The Klipsch THX® Ultra2 custom home theatre system brings real cinema sound to the comforts of home by using the same professional-grade technology as Klipsch's renowned commercial theatre systems. The THX Ultra2 system is a big step up in performance for home installation. It proves that big movie theatre sound can come in a convenient take home size.

According to Principal Engineer Kerry Geist, Klipsch designed its THX Ultra2 system applying the same research and development experience used to create its Klipsch brand professional cinema speakers, which are chosen by top cinema operators around the world.

The new Klipsch THX Ultra2 system consists of three LCR front speakers, two surrounds, two subwoofers and a sub amplifier. Together these create a true THX Ultra2 system in a 5.1 configuration.

In total, there are four different models in the Klipsch THX Ultra2 family that will be available in Australia:

 KL-650-THX LCR, dual 6.5-inch Cerametallic™ woofers, 1-inch titanium diaphragm compression driver coupled to a 10-inch by 6-inch Tractrix® Horn, front-firing port
 KS-525-THX WDST™ Surround, dual 5.25-inch Cerametallic™ woofers, dual 1-inch titanium diaphragm compression drivers coupled to 5-inch square Tractrix® Horns, sealed enclosure
 KW-120-THX Subwoofer, 12-inch Cerametallic™ woofer, 15 pound (240 oz.) motor structure, front-firing port
 KA-1000-THX Subwoofer Amplifier, 1000-watts into 4 ohms, Class D amplifier with toroidal power supply, L/R RCA inputs and outputs, professional style NL2 speakon outputs

Proprietary Klipsch Tractrix® Horn tweeters and Cerametallic™ woofers are used throughout to deliver the ultimate in power, detail and emotional impact from durable, easy-to-install cabinets.

Geist described the new system as “a big step up in performance” for this category. “By applying our professional cinema expertise to the installation environment we have created real theatre-style loudspeakers that offer a combination of flexibility, reliability, and sound quality that is unmatched.”

The LCR speaker features a front-firing port for low bass extension, dual 6.5-inch Cerametallic woofers and a new 6-by 10-inch Tractrix Horn tweeter. The tweeter driver is a 1-inch titanium-dome compression unit designed specifically for use with horns to provide high output with low distortion.

The surround speakers employ a pair of 5.25-Cerametallic woofers and dual 5-inch square Tractrix® Horn tweeters in a Wide Dispersion Surround Technology array. Klipsch’s Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST™) is the industry’s no-compromise approach to surround speaker design because it offers both rich, immersion surround sound and precise localization of individual effects from a speaker that has much more placement flexibility than conventional designs.

To achieve intense, deep-bass output in large rooms, the compact, high-performance subwoofer features a 12-inch, long-throw Cerametallic driver and front-firing port. It includes a 20-foot THX Ultra cable with Neutrik speakon connectors. The subwoofer is driven by an external 1-kilowatt amplifier tailored to its characteristics for maximum output and reliability with extremely low distortion.

The full-featured Class D amplifier, which can be conveniently located near the rest of the installation’s electronics, has a built-in, defeatable low-pass crossover and level control, room-gain compensation switch, completely variable phase control, and an auto power function. This high-performance amplifier can support one or two subwoofers and has a left and right RCA pass-through. It also features a sleek black finish with a machined aluminium front panel and knobs.

All enclosures have the dado and rabbet construction used in Klipsch professional speakers, ensuring cabinet integrity in suspended applications. Omni-Mount suspension points on the LCR and surround speakers facilitate wall or ceiling mounting using standard hardware. Each Ultra2 component, except the amplifier, utilises Monster Cable Z-Series internal wiring and comes in a Galaxy black finish with aluminium fascia.

Klipsch Audio Technologies is a privately held global corporation with worldwide headquarters in Indianapolis, manufacturing facilities in Hope, Arkansas, and wholly-owned subsidiary Klipsch Europe BV in the Netherlands. Klipsch manufactures premium home, commercial, professional cinema, and multimedia loudspeakers under the Klipsch brand name.
