EMC overhauls backup offerings

EMC has upgraded its disk-based backup offerings. One improves its Clariion-based virtual tape library (VTL). Another provides new AX150-based products to small business for general data protection and also Exchange backup.

There is a new, entry-level Clariion DL210 VTL array for medium-sized businesses and branch offices. It uses an EMC AX array with 500GB serial ATA (SATA) drives. EMC's DL, standing for Disk Library, products now have EMC NetWorker 7.3 backup software included.

It manages disk and tape media better, the company claims, registering which files have been exported to physical tape. It also improves the recovery of certain applications and supports IBM's System i Platform -- the platform formerly known as the iSeries. Lastly the DL products offer virtual tape 'shredding'.

An EMC spokesperson hinted that other backup software would be integrated with the Clariion DL software that registers which files have been exported to physical tape. NetApp already offers this capability with its Alacritus-based virtual tape product. The shredding software guarantees that a file has been deleted and complies with U.S. Department of Defense requirements.

EMC has also produced two small business disk backup products, again bundled with integrated software, based on its new AX150 array.

EMC's Insignia Solution for Exchange offers managed storage for Microsoft Exchange. It can automate Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 migration, and restore individual E-mail messages, a mailbox or the entire server.

EMC's Insignia Solution for Data Protection offers basic disk-to-disk backup. EMC says this is much faster and more certain than backup to tape. The included software is Retrospect and backup file encryption is offered.

Pricing for the EMC Insignia Solution for Exchange starts at $US12,495, and EMC Insignia Solution for Data Protection starts $US11,995.

Clariion DL210 pricing begins at around $US50,000. Clariion DL models with integrated NetWorker 7.3 and virtual tape shredding will be available to customers in late Q2, 2006.
