Sun delays JDK 1.2 release

Saying it needs more time to present a full and stable release, the Java product team at Sun Microsystems is again delaying the arrival of Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.2 by at least two months.

The postponed delivery of the next major release of the guts behind Java development and deployment will also set back the emergence of the Java HotSpot virtual machine accelerator. It will now make its appearance around March 1999, Sun officials said this week.

Originally slated for 1997, HotSpot's ship date was first bumped to mid-1998 and now has been bumped into 1999.

The JDK 1.2 delay is attributed to the redirection of efforts from adding features to the currently shipping JDK, Version 1.16, to building added speed and security into Version 1.2.
