Unwired unravels to Melbourne

Unwired is expanding into Melbourne, with plans to roll its services out to cover 25 percent of the city's population by the end of the year.

Residents in Melbourne's CBD and select inner suburbs will have access to Unwired's portable wireless services from Wednesday this week. Coverage will be extended to Clifton Hill, Collingwood, Flemington and North Melbourne in May and rolled out progressively after that.

The mobile wireless provider, which until now only provided services to Sydney, announced in December that it had 42,200 customers.

"We're pretty happy about that and research shows that we are already in the top ten broadband providers in Australia, and that is after only a year and a half operation in just one city," spokesperson Amanda Wallace said.

Unwired owns licences for the WiMax-ready 3.5Ghz and 2.3Ghz spectrum in most major population centres and some regional areas below Perth, near Geelong and the Hunter valley region.

Wallace said Unwired will continue to roll out its services to other Cities around Australia over the next few years.

"Melbourne is our first stop outside of Sydney, and where we go after that has not been made public yet," she said.

Unwired offers two portable wireless plans via either a desktop modem or a wireless card for notebooks. Plans start at $15.95 per month for "fast Internet" (64 to 128Kbps) with a 200MB download allowance and range up to $119.95 per month for 1025Kbps broadband with 12GB download allowance. Speed throttling applies after the monthly allowance of downloads is used, and uploads do not count towards the allowance.
