Withers promoted as Cooney exits PBA

Personal Broadband Australia (PBA) has promoted chief technology officer, Jonathan Withers, to CEO. The announcement comes after previous chief executive, Jim Cooney, left to pursue opportunities with his telecommunications project management start-up, TCI Group.

Cooney injected $12 million into PBA in January 2004. It was acquired by Commander in July 2005, with the telecommunications company purchasing 80 per cent of stock.

Although stepping away from the top job, Cooney is still a non-executive board member and owns 20 per cent of stock.

Withers has been with PBA for more than three years and was involved in the initial roll-out of its iBurst network. He steps into the top job just in time to oversee an enterprise-grade VoIP rollout on the network.

PBA has about 20 channel partners that resell the iBurst network to end-users including Big Air, People Telecom and Optus. It also works with mass merchant retailers Harvey Norman, Bing Lee and Dick Smith.
