Hardware distributor, Westan Australia, has expanded its push into AV, signing a new distribution deal with speaker vendor, Usher Audio Technology.
Westan MD, Victor Aghtan, said the distributor had been working on its presence in the AV market for the past three years. The Usher appointment would help consolidate its position among resellers.
He said Westan would be the sole distributor for Usher, replacing its previous local channel partner.
Aghtan would not name the other party.
"[Usher] did have an Australian distributor, but there wasn't a lot of focus from them," Aghtan said. "When we approached Usher they said 'yes'. Being the sole distributor is a condition in our contract."
The Usher range of speakers starts at $500 and continues to about $25,000 per pair. It also manufactures processors, amplifiers and a CD player. Westan will carry the full product range.
Likely resellers for the range include high-end audio stores and selected installers. Aghtan said he wasn't looking at mass merchants due to the specialised nature of the products.
Westan would also consider distributing a second speaker vendor in the future, particularly if it specialised in home theatre speakers, he said. This area was not a core focus for Usher.
