Sharp still No. 1 in LCD TVs, report says

Sharp remained the world's top maker of LCD TVs in the fourth quarter last year, according to a study.

Sharp remained the world's top maker of LCD TVs in the fourth quarter last year, according to a new report by market research company iSuppli, contradicting an earlier study.

ISuppli's results differ from a report last month by market research firm DisplaySearch, part of the NDP Group, which said that Sony had toppled Sharp from the top of the LCD (liquid crystal display) TV market for the first time.

The iSuppli report puts Sharp's LCD-TV sales at just under 1.3 million units, giving it a market share of 17.4 percent. Sony followed with just over 1.15 million units and 15.4 percent market share.

Sharp also led Sony in North American sales, with 13.7 percent market share to Sony's 12.9 percent, the report said.

However, iSuppli noted that Sharp has been losing market share to its closest rivals, Sony, Samsung Electronics and Philips Electronics, over recent quarters.

LG Electronics bounced from third place back to first place to lead all other television manufacturers in total global television sales in the last quarter of 2005, iSuppli said.
