IDC Finds Notebook Market Ships Over 1.2 Million Units in 2005

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, March 8th, 2006 - IDC has recently released the final results for the Australia Notebook PC market for Q4 2005. The results show the Australian PC market increasing by 5% sequentially and by 37% from the same period in 2004.</p>
<p>The notebook PC market shot over the million shipment mark with 1.2 million notebooks shipped in 2005. The final quarter of 2005 was lower that IDC's forecast as the consumer market underperformed and the corporate market was slower than expected.</p>
<p>In addition IDC has found the following key highlights on the Q4 notebook PC market.</p>
<p>1) Over 50% of the Market is Widescreen: Just a hair over 50% of all notebooks shipped in Q4 2005 were widescreen. In the consumer market widescreen notebooks make up a massive 74% of consumer notebooks shipped. The increased real estate given by widescreen along with the cost advantages for factories of utilising more of the LCD Motherglass is helping to grow the market. Later in 2006 features from Vista will also help to increase the penetration of widescreen notebooks.</p>
<p>2) Consumer and SME Markets are Merging: The 'leakage' of consumer notebooks into the SOHO and SME markets is increasing and greying the lines between consumer and commercial devices. IDC has found that on average 6-7% of dedicated consumer notebooks sold through the retail channel are bought by SMEs.</p>
<p>3) Sub $1,000 Notebook Market Is Reaching Capacity: Barring any major shifts in the exchange rate the sub $1,000 has just about reached its market capacity. The top four notebook vendors, Toshiba, HP, Dell and Acer now all have offerings in this space and virtually all possible Tier 3 retail channels are shipping devices.</p>
<p>Michael Sager, IDC Hardware Research Manager, noted that "Toshiba climbed back to the top of the notebook PC market in the fourth quarter, growing its shipments by 16.5% from last quarter. HP fell to second position with 19% share after leading the market for two consecutive quarters. Dell ascended to third position, posting 35% growth from the same period in 2004. Finishing in fourth position was Acer who has fallen, since gaining the top position in Q2."</p>
<p>"Rounding out the top 5 was Lenovo who was still largely constricted to the commercial market in the fourth quarter. Apple had a very successful performance in this quarter to grab almost 5% of the notebook market. The seemingly non-stop advertising campaign from Asus seems to be paying off with the vendor climbing to the seventh position in Q4," stated Mr. Sager.</p>
