Norfolk Island speeds up with NETGEAR

<p>Norfolk Telecom, the local telecommunications provider for Norfolk Island, is using technology from NETGEAR to provide a better and more stable Internet service to the island’s 1,800 inhabitants.</p>
<p>Norfolk Telecom, wholly owned and managed by the Government of Norfolk Island, provides customers with modems to enable them to access its ADSL network. It was initially using modems from another vendor but after carrying out extensive tests decided to move across to the NETGEAR product, enhancing its service offering.</p>
<p>“The benefits were immediate. We were able to get customers online and operational at greater distances and in areas where older cables were causing issues,” said Stuart Robertson, Chief Technical Officer for the Administration of Norfolk Island. “We also found that the NETGEAR products tended to provide better stability, remaining up and operational where other modems were dropping out and required retraining.”</p>
<p>Norfolk Telecom is now using a selection of NETGEAR’s modem routers – the DG632, DG834 and DG834G – as its standard lease routers, enabling it to provide customers located up to 5km away with Internet access. Not only does Robertson believe the products are more robust, but their simplicity allows even inexperienced personnel to manage the set up process.</p>
<p>“Our telecoms technicians, whose skill base is not IT focussed, are able to set up and install the products very easily and we’ve barely had to use the manuals,” he explains.</p>
<p>Robertson says the size and location of the island – only 8km by 5 km, surrounded by a wide expanse of ocean – causes a range of issues when it comes to IT infrastructure.</p>
<p>“The level of corrosion you see in the systems here is beyond anything I’ve seen elsewhere. Couple this with the high humidity and you’re looking at a pretty dismal environment for IT hardware - it’s like trying to run your servers from a yacht.”</p>
<p>The isolated location of Norfolk Island often sees Norfolk Telecom modifying elements of its network to suit the environment, which would be much harder without solid and adaptable products.</p>
<p>“We look to provide a service that works for the customer and, in order to achieve this, we sometimes need to modify its operation,” said Robertson. “Our attitude is to have a go regardless and often we find we can get services operational when technically they shouldn’t work. For these circumstances, the stability of the NETGEAR products is a real help.”</p>
