Shrinking form factors: Dream PC

Styled with acrylic and best orientated vertically, the pre-production Dream PC we saw packs all of the functionality expected of a mid-tower PC, plus the mobility, but without the expansion possibilities.

Pioneer Computers has taken careful measures to ensure adequate breathing for the CPU and internal components by means of a side air vent and powerful CPU fan.

It has minute dimensions of only 15.7x25x4.4cm (WxHxD) and weighs just 2.5Kg. It has an external power supply, but on the inside it packs a Pentium 4 2.4GHz CPU, 256MB of DDR SDRAM, a 40GB hard drive and a notebook form factor CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive. Naturally, component integration plays a huge part in a PC as small as this, and the tiny iWill motherboard supplies audio as well as Intel Extreme Graphics.

Nevertheless, this combination of components is more than capable of tackling everyday office-related tasks and will even handle a little bit of low-level gaming, as was proven by our forays into Quake 3. It scored 205 in SYSMark 2001 and managed 1505 marks in 3DMark 2001.

Connectivity is abundant both at the front and rear of the unit, with plenty of FireWire and USB 2.0 ports as well as a 10/100 network interface.

A parallel port is missing and there is no modem installed. Its very small size means there is absolutely no chance of expansion apart from installing a larger stick of memory or a faster CPU (it can support up to 3GHz). It comes with a one-year on-site (four-hour response) warranty.

In brief: Pioneer P4 Dream PC
(Pre-production unit)
Due to its extreme portability and relatively good performance, this is a great little unit for the IT professional or the home user who wants to share a computer system between multiple locations.
