Microsoft buys portfolio management software

Microsoft Friday said it will purchase software from UMT, a company that sells IT portfolio management software and provides consulting services.

Microsoft has unveiled plans to purchase software and intellectual property from UMT, a vendor that sells IT portfolio management software and provides consulting services.

The terms of the deal, which is expected to close early in 2006, were not disclosed. Microsoft is buying the part of UMT's business that develops software, while the consulting arm of UMT will remain a separate entity and become the UMT Consulting Group, according to a spokeswoman from Waggener Edstrom, Microsoft's public relations firm.

A Microsoft representative was not available to comment Friday.

Microsoft plans to incorporate technology from UMT into its Office Enterprise Project Management Solution, which is based on Office Project Professional 2003 and Office Project Server 2003, according to the company. Office Enterprise Project Management is a combination of Microsoft software and IT services to help companies align their technology resources with business objectives so they can more effectively develop and manage IT projects.

UMT Consulting will continue to work with Microsoft to deliver IT services around the company's newly bolstered portfolio management software platform, the spokeswoman said in an e-mail interview.

UMT, in New York, was founded in 1989 and also has offices in London and Bucharest, Romania. The companies are not disclosing how many employees will be affected by Microsoft's acquisition of UMT until the deal closes and the two companies are merged, according to the Waggener Edstrom spokeswoman. Until then, UMT will continue operations as usual.
