iiNet pushes for total ADSL2+ coverage in metro Sydney, Perth

iiNet is on track to providing metropolitan Perth and Sydney with ADSL2+ Internet by the end of January.

Upon completion, the company will have rolled out 200 DSLAMs in those cities -- as well as selected exchanges in other Australian cities, allowing customers to benefit from a broadband Internet service that delivers speeds of up to 24Mbps.

The maximum upload speed on the ADSL2+ standard is 1Mbps.

iiNet managing director Michael Malone said customers can be up to 4km from an exchange to receive ADSL2+.

"Realistically, for access to high speeds, 2-2.5km is desirable," he said. "I'm a bit over 2km from my exchange and get about 9Mbps download and 1Mbps upload," he added.

Although promising peaks of 24Mbps, determining the more realistic average download speed was a lot harder, Malone said.

"One basic problem is that ADSL2+ modems have only been available in Australia for a few months at best. So there are few people testing the technology today. It fundamentally depends on distance from the exchange."

A Starter package with 4GB download during peak periods and the same amount again in off-peak costs $73.31 ($39.95 for broadband; $33.36 for line rental), while a Heavy plan with 40GB peak/off-peak download costs $123.31.

Any ADSL2+ capable modem will work for customers looking to migrate to the service, Malone said.

"If customers have one already, it will work fine. If not, we sell Belkin units, which we've had a good run with and support."

All up, iiNet hopes to have 70,000 customers using the fast ADSL service by January.
