LAN Systems spans into data encryption

LAN Systems has strengthened its security portfolio, scoring a distribution deal with Queensland-based hard disk drive encryption vendor, Eracom Technologies.

The new partnership will see LAN carry Eracom's range of software encryption products - ProtectDrive, ProtectFile and ProtectPack - under its privacy of information series. The distributor is the first and sole wholesaler appointed by Eracom in A/NZ.

LAN Systems national sales manager, Leigh Howard, said the product was a complementary fit to its security vendor line-up and would suit any of its existing resellers.

The distributor's current list includes Check Point, WatchGuard and Crossbeam.

"We didn't have anything in the way of hard disk encryption," Howard said. "It's our intention not to duplicate products across technology areas, so this will be a beautiful fit."

The Eracom products were applicable to all segments of the market, Howard said, because they suited anybody with a notebook PC. They also complied with the Federal Government's Privacy of Information Act and ACSI 33 (Australian Government Information and communications Technology Security Manual), making them a viable option for corporates with legislative requirements, he said.

"There are huge opportunities in the marketplace for resellers, given the rising issues around corporate governance," he said.

Although the technology behind data encryption was complex, Howard said resellers would not be required to gain accreditation in order to sell the Eracom software. However, LAN and Eracom would stage a series of sales and technical training sesssions in the near future.

"It is a relatively easy product to administer and implement, so resellers should find it an easy add-on to existing product sales," he said. Retail pricing starts from $200 per notebook licence for the base ProtectDrive product.

Howard said Eracom had chosen LAN to scale up the size of its channel base.

Prior to LAN's appointment, the company had dealt with a handful of resellers directly, he said.

The distributor would also look into bundling the Protect family of products with other vendor offerings to provide partners with a more integrated security stack, Howard said.
